Rose Bruford Recall

I had my recall today for Rose Bruford. I got there stupidly early - I know I insist punctuality for auditions but I was sitting in their canteen almost 90 minutes early. There are four sections of this recall: singing, speeches, movement workshop and voice workshop. I was on the top of the list for my group and had the singing first. I hate singing.

I sang Paloma Faith - Picking Up The Pieces and was told I had a lovely tone. Yet that still doesn't help the fact that I near enough have a panic attack whenever I even think of singing. They recommend on their website and in the email that you should sing a musical song, when really they are incredibly relaxed and don't mind at all. Everybody was amazing.

The movement workshop was more of a workout. Instead of pushing us creatively like the other drama schools that I have auditioned for, we were doing push ups and (attempted) splits. Not impressed at all. By the end of it, we were absolutely sweating and aching for a hot water bottle. As for the voice workshop, again, was about articulation and breathing - not much to tell! With the speeches, I was stopped around five lines into my Shakespeare Portia monologue which was expected and redirected. I was asked to imagine that whenever she was angry, she laughed. I did the same five lines again and then did three of my modern. And that was it. Ridiculously short.

Wasn't recalled and surprisingly wasn't that bothered. It made me realise how much I want the others.

  1. Hey Heather, thanks for the info! Could I ask a couple of quick questions, as I have my recall next week eeek - I know it might not be the same experience but I'd still love to know: do you have to sing accompanied, and is the singing, speeches and direction in front of everyone else? Thank you :)!

    1. You have the option of singing accompanied if you would prefer it. There was a piano there for the people that brought the sheet music with them. I, however, chose not to. The singing and movement classes were in groups of around 15 people. But if I remember correctly, the speeches were alone.
All the best for your audition!
