Central

I'm sitting in a comfy sofa chair in Starbucks just outside of Tottenham Court Road and I'm fighting the urge to fall asleep. Yes, I only got 4 hours sleep last night, but I also just finished my Central audition.
Around half an hour before our audition time, we were taken into their main theatre just next to the foyer, where we waited and filled out a few forms for the examiner also. Split into twelve or so groups, we took it in turns to do either the tour, speeches or workshop. I did mine in that order, in my group of seven people.
The building is impressively and scarily massive. A few of the small corridors were very daunting and resembled a derelict building. Yet, all the rehearsal space is still amazing. It came to the speeches and we sat on chairs against the walls of the room. The panel of two watched everyone perform one Shakespeare and one modern monologue in front of everyone. I came out feeling veryyyy happy with my monologues.
The workshop was very short. So short that I can barely remember what happened. It started off with very basic focus activities such as walking towards someone on the other side of the circle saying your name while they do the same to someone else. If you're a drama student, you've definitely played this. We then moved on to walking with intention and changing tempos. Twice they made us imagine floating into the air and gradually lying down on the floor. We then did an activity where we had to move like flowing water, then switch to sharp movements, then switch to chaos. So I guess they were big on pace and contrast.
You may or may not be asked to sing unaccompanied but you also have the option of turning down a Musical Theatre course consideration and not sing at all. I chose to give it a go and banged out a bit of good ol' Paloma. I didn't take it very seriously - which was demonstrated to the panel when I paused to cough and clear my throat and then continue. I am however starting to get a wee bit more confident with my singing.
I wasn't asked to stay for the afternoon, but was then told by another auditionee that being turned away does not mean that they have said no. All it means is that they've seen everything they need to see and have already made their decision. So now I'm waiting for another Ucas email!
Oh - did I mention that I didn't get into GSA? Well, I didn't get in. Which could possibly be a blessing as its 2 hours away. But anyway, that brings the tally to three schools left - RADA, Lamda and Central.

  1. Hi Heather,
Thanks for your blog - it's really helpful!
I hope this year will be very successful for you, good luck!

I want to audition for Central as well, but in the website thy say they want a musical song with a sheet of music. Did you do that?
This is a bit tricky bit if you don't play a piano and no one can play for you.
    Thanks!

    1. Thank you! That's great to hear.
Don't worry - I panicked a lot about that too! I think they must request that so that you have it if you are recalled. The reason why I say this, is because at the preliminary in the morning you sing unaccompanied for 30 seconds or so. And, if you don't want to be considered for musical theatre, you don't have to sing at all. If you are recalled for MT, someone will play the piano for you. Best of luck x

    2. Thanks a lot for your reply, Heather!
I want to ask one more question, as you are the most experienced and successful person in auditions I've ever met! :)

I have one concern as I am not a native English speaker, I do speak with accent. Did you meet someone like me in auditions, in any Drama schools?
Worry a lot that I might not be considered because of the accent.

    3. With Central - you are in luck! They LOVE accents. In my audition last year, they asked a Ukrainian girl to recite a poem in ukranian. Do not worry, there is no discrimation at all.
