RADA Recall 2.0

I'm actually unsure if a third round is in the cards this year. Usually you come out of an audition and know if you've done well or not. But I honestly have no clue whatsoever. This morning has been a complete blur.

I arrived at the Gower street building five minutes after my scheduled auditioned time because I was stupid enough to get on the wrong train. I was beyond nervous - perhaps because of my rejection last year or maybe because it was my first audition this year. Sally took us round to Chenies street as usual and I went straight upstairs for my audition.

There were four people on the panel including Nona, the Head of Acting, who fortunately recognised me from last year. I shook their hands and sat down infront of them. They asked which speeches
I had (Phoebe - As You Like It, Queen Margaret - King Henry VI Part 3, and Laura - Chatroom) and what song I would be singing (Let Me Sign - Robert Pattinson). They asked me do to my speeches first, whereas last year I had the option of choosing to get singing done and out of the way.

I started with Phoebe and despite a strong start, I fluffed my line halfway through. I'm going to put it down to nerves and a lack of confidence in the speech, but it was seriously gutting. I recovered quickly however and smoothed it over. At this point the exact words going through my head are "oh shit".

I then performed my modern which went very well despite a few panic moments as I searched frantically for the line. But it did go well. They requested my second Shakespeare speech once I'd finished, and because I did Queen Margaret for my final round last year, it went flawlessly. So let's hope I redeemed myself in their eyes.

Instead of doing my song at this point, I was asked to sit down for the interview. They wanted to know what I've been doing the past six months and what I'm doing at the moment. The were quite impressed that this blog has near 30,000 hits (thanks guys!) but did slip in that they hoped I wasn't telling you all what questions they were asking. So I'm afraid, I'll have to be careful what I say. However, each interview is unique, so even if I did list out questions, they'll probably differ anyway. Plus, I did really bullshit my way through the interview.

And then the singing. The acoustics, like last year, were very complementary, and to be honest, I felt like it went better than my speeches. And that's it! I found out 11 days later after my recall last year, so hopefully it won't be too long. But as I say, I'm most definitely not assuming that I'll get to the third round just because of my success last year. Love to you all x

    1. A safe bet would be to do a song from a musical. So think of any you have seen and go from there. Other than that, any song is fine. Sorry I don't have any suggestions x

btw, have you ever heard about someone who had to say his second classic monologue on the first round?

    2. I had to do my third, so did the guy just before me. In my case I think it was because both my main speeches were about death.. they wanted to see something a bit less morbid! It makes no difference to your chances of a recall though :)

  4. Good luck hun, keep us posted! I will be auditioning for drama schools much later this year (NIDA in Australia in November/December) and then North American and UK (probably just RADA and Old Vic) schools in January/February 2015, so I've got time to prepare, but it's lovely to read your blog so that I sort of maybe have an idea of what's going to happen!

  5. Loving the blog! I have my RADA first round this week and was wondering if you tell them both of your Shakespeare's and they then pick one or if you just tell them the one you want to do? Thank you! :)

  8. Hi Heather, I'm 17 and auditioning for drama school this year for the first time. I've got my central audition coming up but I know you have to do it in front of the other people auditioning, I'm quite looking forward to having an audience, but is everyone else really nice or do they try and put you off??? Also do you have any advice for a first time person auditioning? Love your blog it's been really helpful!! :)

  11. Hey, this is a great blog, very informative and usefull, so thank you! It's also interesting to think that Nona and the other panel members might even be reading your blog now! I was just wondering, after your preliminary, how long did it take for them to get back to you this year? I have just had my prelim in Manchester so I'm very anxious to be put out of my misery no matter what the outcome! Thanks x

  12. Hi Heather: I found your fantastic blog, and thank you for this wealth of information. I am an American, living in San Francisco, and I've had a mad nudge and a pull to finally head back to drama school, for the acting foundation I haven't really had. When I've been been considering where I want to go, I keep coming back to London: I ALWAYS wanted to train in London at RADA or the Old Vic, but my fear stopped me. A funny thing is, my best friend from High School: not joking: her name is Heather Stanley, too :-) Funny world: anyhow, I'm in my early 40s, and I'm wondering if it's an insane idea to even want to try.Your blog is incredibly helpful and I wish you all the best: RADA would be lucky to have you, and please don't give up: if your heart is set on RADA, then don't give up until you get in. You seem very, very talented, and I just want to encourage you to keep trying for your dream, until you have it. If it's RADA, then I wouldn't even consider elsewhere: Whenever I've taken my second choice, I've always regretted it.

  13. Heather, I just realized you last name is spelled Shanley, not Stanley....sorry I misread that!

  17. Hey Heather, how did RADA work out for you? Surely you must know by now?

  18. Hello, we haven't heard from you for quite a while now! How did it go? Even if it didn't go well, I hope you are still trying because you seem to be a talented young girl (judging from Edwards feedback letter). Have been reading this blog for a couple of hours now and it was an absolute pleasure for an aspiring RADA student.
